Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has recently sat down for a new interview featured in ITV’s documentary, Tabloids on Trial. In this program, airing on 25 July, Prince Harry will discuss his ongoing mission to expose the illegal tactics used by Britain’s tabloid press. This marks his first major interview since the conclusion of his court case against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) back in February. Throughout the interview, Prince Harry will shed light on how journalists at various publications engaged in unethical practices, including phone hacking, “blagging,” and hiring private investigators for illicit activities.
Following a lengthy legal battle, Prince Harry was awarded damages amounting to £140,600 after it was concluded that MGN had engaged in extensive phone hacking between 2006 and 2011. The court’s findings revealed that MGN had resorted to unlawful information gathering tactics, leading to a settlement between the Duke and the publisher. Additionally, it was stated that MGN had attempted to conceal the truth about their dishonest actions over the years. In a statement shared by Prince Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, the Duke expressed his commitment to bringing about positive change by holding tabloid newspapers accountable for their misconduct.
According to ITV’s press release, the upcoming documentary featuring Prince Harry’s interview will delve into the details of his fight against tabloid press malpractice. The program will explore the extent of knowledge among Fleet Street’s decision-makers regarding the scandal surrounding illegal information gathering techniques. The documentary will not only feature Prince Harry but also high-profile celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Charlotte Church, and Paul Gascoigne, who have had their lives affected by intrusive reporting practices.
In addition to his case against MGN, Prince Harry is part of a group of individuals, including Sir Elton John and Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, who are pursuing legal action against Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). The lawsuit alleges that ANL engaged in or commissioned various illicit activities, including planting listening devices, “blagging” private records, burglaries, and unauthorized access to private phone conversations. Despite the allegations, ANL has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Furthermore, Prince Harry’s legal battle against News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publisher of The Sun and the now-defunct News Of The World, is set to go to trial in January 2025. This case revolves around alleged unlawful information-gathering practices, excluding phone hacking allegations. NGN has maintained its innocence, refuting claims of misconduct at The Sun. As the legal proceedings progress, Prince Harry remains dedicated to holding tabloid newspapers accountable for their actions and seeking justice for those affected by unethical journalism practices.
Prince Harry’s involvement in these legal battles against tabloid press highlights the importance of holding media organizations accountable for their actions. Through his advocacy and commitment to bringing about positive change, Prince Harry continues to fight for transparency and integrity within the media industry. The upcoming documentary featuring his interview serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to exposing the truth and seeking justice for those impacted by unethical journalism practices.
