Spain’s royal family, including King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their teenage daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, hosted the national football team at the La Zarzuela Palace in Madrid to celebrate the team’s historic Euro 2024 victory. The players brought along the Henri Delaunay Trophy, and the royals posed for photos with the iconic silverware.
Princess Leonor, 18, and Sofia, 17, recreated a very special photograph from 12 years ago when they posed with the trophy at the ages of six and five respectively. The young royals once again donned Spain’s football kit for the public engagement at the palace. Meanwhile, King Felipe wore a grey suit with a red tie, and Queen Letizia sported a scarlet Carolina Herrera frock.
The Spanish national team’s win marked their fourth European Championship title, with previous victories in 2012, 1964, and 2008. The squad wore specially-made shirts with the number four to signify this record-breaking achievement. The celebrations were filled with joy for the royal family and fans across the country.
While there was celebration for the Spanish royals, there was heartache for the Prince of Wales and Prince George, who were seated alongside the Spanish royals in the same box during the final match. The nail-biting game culminated in Mikel Oyarzabal securing the winning goal for Spain in the 86th minute, leaving fans at the edge of their seats.
Before the match, the British and Spanish royals posed for a photograph together, with Prince William and Kate showing their support for the England team. Despite the loss, they congratulated Spain on their victory and commended their teamwork, determination, and grit. Prince William also expressed his gratitude to Gareth Southgate for his leadership and humility throughout the tournament.
As Gareth Southgate resigned as England’s manager following the defeat, Prince William, who is the President of the FA, released a heartfelt message thanking Southgate for his contribution to the team. The Prince acknowledged Southgate’s ability to lead the team with compassion, humility, and true leadership under intense pressure.
