The highly anticipated opening night of “Life and Trust,” the new immersive theater experience by Emursive, drew a star-studded crowd in the midst of a scorching summer week. Known for its predecessor, “Sleep No More,” the production company delivered another intriguing performance that captivated the audience from start to finish. Celebrities such as Murray Hill, Bridget Everett, Lorna Luft, David Byrne, Darren Aronofsky, Gina Gershon, Joel Grey, Ira Glass, and Rachel Antonoff were among the notable guests in attendance.
The Faustian storyline of “Life and Trust” revolves around a banking tycoon during the Great Depression, leading the audience through six subterranean floors of a Financial District skyscraper. Audience members were required to follow the action literally, which created a unique and immersive experience for all. However, during Thursday night’s opening, an unexpected encounter between Murray Hill, Bridget Everett, and Lorna Luft on a staircase caused a temporary delay in the performance.
Unexpected Challenges
Amidst the excitement of chasing one of the characters, Mephisto down the stairs, a group of audience members found themselves halted by the celebrity gabfest, hindering the flow of the fast-paced plot. It took an irritated first-nighter to intervene and shout “Move!” for the blockade to clear and for the show to progress. Despite this minor setback, the show continued to captivate and entertain all in attendance.
Comedian Jackie Hoffman was seen enjoying a particularly provocative scene involving a cowboy and a man in a horse costume, quipping about the level of passion on display. The audience was also treated to a homoerotic boxing match, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the production. Danya Taymor, Amber Ardolino, Daniel K. Isaac, Claybourne Elder, and Montego Glover were also among the guests who experienced the immersive and thrilling performance of “Life and Trust.”
